Tourism minister in Bermuda resigns during protests
Shawn Crockwell quits its position as Bermuda’s Tourism and Transport Minister and launches attack on the island's Prime Minister Michael Dunkley
Bermuda’s minister of tourism resigned on Wednesday in the middle of tense protests caused by the immigration policy of the island.
To explain his decision, Shawn Crockwell declared that he considers that his party is no longer trustworthy under the governance of Premier Michael Dunkley and that the country's officials lack understanding of black communities' social problems.
The One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) conducted by the island's Premier has proposed a project on allowing permanent residency and citizenship after 15 years and 20, respectively. This policy raised protests among the islanders, which blocked Bermuda's Parliament members to enter the House of Assembly for debate on the latest initiative.
The Prime Minister accepted his resignation “with regret” and stated that the tourism minister will be replaced as soon as possible. Crockwell was an "effective minister who progressed the government’s agenda to restore workplace jobs and opportunity for Bermudians across the island, from the formation of the Bermuda Tourism Authority, the Gaming Commission and the imminent development of a new hotel in St George’s," he added.
Shawn Crockwell resigned its position after spending the last 9 years in the Bermuda's political scene.
