Travel companies might be fined in Denmark
Travel companies have been threatened with fines in case illegal migrants came into the country, to control the number of asylum-seekers
Officials in Sweden, Denmark and Germany meeting in Brussels aim to enforce rules and reintroduce border control after migrants situation got worse.
“We are going to monitor the situation hour by hour and we will if necessary put the carrier liability into force — and it can happen with a very short notice,” the Danish minister for immigration, Inger Støjberg warned. “We do not wish to be the final destination for thousands and thousands of asylum seekers,” Ms Støjberg declared.
Officials want to make sure that the passengers traveling through their territories have proper travel documents, after the migrant crisis got even more tense and after, for example, 26.000 of the citizens arriving in Sweden were unaccompanied minors.
Last year, Germany and Sweden alone received 1.26 million asylum applications, while Denmark become a transit point for asylum-seekers reaching Scandinavia. The decision to tighten border control came after these countries could no longer cope with the growing migrant influx.
On the other hand, critics say that the reinforcing of the visa checks on flight passengers before boarding will make it more difficult for refugees to reach Europe and seek for asylum.
The European Commission argues that travel companies fines in the case of asylum seekers should not be introduced into any of the EU territories, according to the EU rules and regulations.
