Mexico is seeing an increase in pet-friendly tourism

News

The high impact of pets across all communities and lifestyles has a direct influence on the implementation of tourism activities as well as the country’s economic development, as the "Pet Friendly" segment of the tourism market is constantly growing to adjust to customers demands.

Mexico is home to 43.8 million pet dogs, which accounts for 54.8 percent from the total number of pets housed in more than 25 million Mexican homes, shows latest data from the National Welfare Survey of Mexico's National Institute of Statistics & Geography.

As Mexico's secretary of Tourism Miguel Torruco Marqués stated during the first edition of the World Congress of Dogs’ Welfare and Health, an event powered by the Mexican Canine Federation, services across the pet-friendly niche have slowly diversified and are currently increasing in such way that dogs are more and more welcomed in hotels and restaurants along with their owners.

Moreover, the animals can now enjoy special accommodation features, tailored menus, dedicated activities and events, as well as spa services, grooming spaces and customized shops. Airlines also have considerably eased the requirements for aboard pets and are now frequently allowing animals to travel in the passengers’ cabin, of course under specific safety rules and constant supervision.

At the same time, Mexico has seen an increase in animal-related events of all kinds: veterinary congresses, exhibitions, workshops, contests and so on, which also contributed to raising both awareness and revenue across the tourism sector. For example, the recent World Congress of Dogs’ Welfare and Health welcomed doctors and animal welfare experts across 30 countries.

Mexico also prepares for the annual trade show held in Mexico City next year, between March 26 and March 29.
