2024's Top Destinations and Traveler Motivations Revealed by Global Hotel Alliance

News

The Global Hotel Alliance (GHA) has disclosed the most favored destinations for 2024 and the driving factors inspiring voyagers to explore them.

Japan and Thailand lead the rankings, succeeded by Spain, Canada, and Hawaii, as per a study involving GHA DISCOVERY loyalty program participants. The aspiration for novel destinations and experiences stands out as a central motivation steering travel choices.

Europe emerges as the predominant region sought for visitation next year, while Asia witnesses a surge in staycations, notably in China, where members are planning over five on average, followed by Thailand and Malaysia with more than four.

In line with the previous survey, GHA DISCOVERY members predominantly plan leisure-driven travel, with most anticipating no more than one business trip on average and 2-4 leisure trips across regions.

The resurgence of Asian outbound travel is evident, led by China, where members have six to seven leisure trips planned, closely trailed by Hong Kong, Thailand, and Germany. The Middle East and Africa stand out, with travelers in these regions planning almost equal business and leisure trips in 2024.

Regional preferences for GHA DISCOVERY members include:

  • Asia: Trips to Japan, China, and Thailand remain popular, showcasing a penchant for exploring intra-regional destinations.
  • Europe: Residents favor Thailand and Japan for the second consecutive year, with Spain and Italy replacing the US as top choices to delve deeper into their own region.
  • Australia and New Zealand: Travel enthusiasts are heading to Singapore and the UK in 2024, with Sydney being a city hotspot for staycations. When traveling to Europe, there's a desire to visit Portugal.
  • North America: Residents are still planning vacations to Japan but have shifted focus from trips to China to getaways in Hawaii, Spain, and Thailand. This market exhibits the least interest in staycations.
  • Middle East & North Africa: Japan remains in demand, but Canada and Oman emerge as new hot destinations compared to Italy and Singapore in 2023.

What are the motivations, inspirations, and preferences?

Social Media Leads to Bookings: 75% of respondents cite social media as their top inspiration source, especially in Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, and Oceania.

Family and Foodie Breaks: Travel patterns signal a return to 'normal,' with preferences for trips with spouses, intimate family travel, and a rise in foodie breaks.

Loyalty Program Influence: Loyalty program websites and apps now top the list for travel research and booking across regions, surpassing brand and hotel sites.

Upgrades in Demand: Room upgrades are the most coveted in-hotel loyalty benefits, with 70% of elite GHA DISCOVERY members emphasizing their importance, especially in Europe.

Kristi Gole, Executive Vice President of Strategy at GHA, expressed optimism for a robust 2024, highlighting the continued willingness of travelers to invest in premium experiences while expecting elevated service levels and enhanced loyalty program value.
